Rupert on the future of printed media

IT’S A SHAME, but whenever people mention journalism or citizen journalism it incites heated passion. For that reason, Rupert Murdoch’s recent predictions that newspapers will be completely digitalised within two to three years made me want to speak out.

I like reading printed newspapers. What’s more I like reading free online blogs and news sites. What today’s media mogul like Rupert forget is that the world has changed. It’s a place where one size doesn’t fit all – especially in the case of news media.

Some people like to read their newspapers in local coffee shops. Some people like to read their newspapers on train journeys to work. Some people like to read their newspapers on their veranda. Some people need to read their newspapers because they don’t have access to the internet.

A printed newspaper is a totally different reading experience to online. After all the new digitalised world is not about control, it’s all about niches.

You’re other recent predictions:

“I believe newspapers will be selling subscriptions on the web”

“Instead of an analogue paper printed on paper you may get it on a panel which would be mobile, which will receive the whole newspaper over the air (and) be updated every hour or two”

As superstar Darryl Kerrigan would have said “These are going straight to the pool room.”
