Digital and social media left out in the cold
Marketing guru and author Seth Godin recently wrote “Ignore the new gatekeeper at your peril.”
I think my local business chamber are just about to, by hosting an ‘Ask the Media’ seminar populated with only traditional mass media representative’s.
No digital or social media representatives…only The Herald (paper), NBN Television (TV) and KO/NX FM (Radio).
Seth defined the old gatekeeper as big media channels such as TV and print newspapers, where poor old business people had to negotiate with columnists and bullying editors to get a mention and that was at long shot.
The new gatekeepers are a completely different animal…who was Seth talking about? The Blogger.
As an active member and supporter of the Hunter Business Chamber, I’d just like to inform them of a significant statistic:
“March 2008 marked one of the most significant turning points in the rapid evolution of Australia’s digital advertising industry. It was the month in which, for the first time, Australians began spending more time online than they did watching television”
AC Nielson
However, I do support the Hunter Business Chamber in its activities. So if you are in the area, please join me and some very old mass media gatekeepers for a laugh.
Details as follows:
‘Ask the Media’
What is the best way to place an ad?
Who do you need to speak to about news items?
Who is the best contact?
These are just some of the questions that Chamber members will have
answered at a special seminar held by our media colleagues later this
month.
Meet representatives from The Herald, NBN Television and KO/NX FM
for an information seminar that is sure to help you access the right
media and the right people in the media.
Venue: Hunter Business Chamber, 99 Selwyn Street, Mayfield East NSW
Time: 5.30pm to 6.30pm
Cost: free
Date : 25th September 2008
I hope to see you there…

‘the right media, and the right people’….. righhhht
Newcastle is still an old media town, it will be for another 3-5 years I think.
Whilst the majority of traffic we get on http://www.imwiththeband.com is from Newcastle, we still have to chase venues, bands, booking agencies, etc. for press releases constantly, we have to chase them for gig lists, all that sort of free promotional opportunity stuff. They’re just completely retarded at it, though they do have time to update their myspaz profiles all day.
We’ve been averaging 15k hits per month, and around 35k page views for the last 6 months. 80% of that is from the Hunter and Central Coast regions.

I’m turning blue in the face waiting for your next post… what did they say? Who spoke? I’m absolutely fascinated by this constantly bubbling topic of “old media vs. new media”.
Firstly, I don’t think it should be us against them and, secondly, I can’t work out if I’m US or THEM…
Having begun my writing career as a cadet magazine journalist for Australian Consolidated Press in 1998, then dabbling in print, radio and TV-copywriting before becoming a ‘commercial radio station’ announcer & freelance newspaper columnist – I guess my resume should be stamped OLD MEDIA.
I still write freelance contributions for ACP titles but I’ve found myself, this year, intoxicated by the freedom, interactivity and inspirational quality of NEW, online/digital media. The content is SO fresh and the opinions of experts or enthusiasts – who are more often than not, an equal authority on their chosen topic because it’s their passion, not just their job title – so varied, intriguing and… HONEST!
Sorry, let me just glide back in from that tangent; my point is I’m equally disappointed to hear that no “new media” kids were invited to represent a point of view. Of course, I’m also unsure of how these ‘special seminars’ work…?
It sounds similar to one business purchasing sponsorship of a networking event so they get to spruik whatever they’re peddling? You can label it an “information seminar” on vegetables but if it’s only the carrot growers association who gets to speak everyone would, er… well, that’s a terrible analogy so I’ll just throw back to you now.
Dear The Marketer,
Please tell us what they said regarding: ‘What is the best way to place an ad?’ and
‘Who is the best contact?’
